Energy Input and Output Analysis of Sweet Orange Production in Nigeria CIGR Journal
Clement, Ogunlade Adesoji; Simeon, Jekayinfa Olayinka.
The study was undertaken to investigate the energy input and output of a group of citrus research farms in Nigeria. Data used in this study were collected in-situ on yearly basis; therefore the analysed and discussed energy values were averages of data collected over the years. The research results indicated that total energy inputs were 46.64 GJha-1. About 35% was generated by human labour, 38% from diesel oil and machinery, while other inputs contributed 29% of the total energy input.  About 87% of the total energy inputs used in sweet orange production was from direct sources (seeds, fertilizers, manure, chemicals, machinery) and 13% was from indirect sources (human labor, diesel). Mean orange yield was about 41000 kg ha-1.  The net energy and energy...

Increased metabolisable energy from glycerine or soybean oil in broilers Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Merval,Ramon Rêgo; Dourado,Leilane Rocha Barros; Silva,Flávio Ferreira; Santos,Edna Teles dos; Lopes,João Batista.
ABSTRACT The effect of increased levels of metabolisable energy with glycerine or soybean oil was evaluated in the performance of broilers at four growth stages (1 to 7, 8 to 21, 22 to 33 and 34 to 42 days), in addition to the carcass and cut yield. A total of 2,400 birds were used in a completely randomised design in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme (two sources x four energy levels), with five replications. The treatments were determined by including glycerine or soybean oil at intervals of 75 kcal/kg of metabolisable energy in the diet: the first level with 75 kcal less than the requirement, the second corresponding to the requirement for each stage (2925, 2980, 3050 and 3100 Kcal), and the third and fourth levels with 75 kcal and 150 kcal more than the...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the intake and total and partial digestibility of diets using corn, soybean hulls and citrus pulp associated with sunflower meal or urea in feedlot steers. Four steers ½ Aberdeen Angus vs. ½ Nellore, fitted with rumen and duodenum cannulas, with 18 months old and 360 kg of initial weight. The diets were composed of two energy sources (corn and citrus pulp) associated with two nitrogen sources (urea and sunflower meal), in a total of four treatments, with forage:concentrate ratio of 40:60. The statistical design was a Latin square with four treatments and four periods of 21 days each. The average daily dry matter intake was influenced (p < 0.05) by the diets, with the highest value was observed in corn and sunflower...

Minerals and Energy Sources OceanDocs
Salt can be considered as the most widespread mineral in Eastern Africa and its recovery from the sea is a comparatively simple process given certain environmental conditions. The location of solar saltworks is controlled by the rainfall regime and the occurrence of suitable impermeable soils. These conditions occur from Ngomeni northwards to the Lamu area. Extensive saltworks have been established at the Gongoni-Fundi Is area and Kurawa. The total area dedicated to salt production is over 5,000 hectares that yield an average of over 170,000 tonnes of salt annually. The method of salt production utilised by the five established companies is very much the same throughout the area. Seawater is introduced into the ponds which are run in series. Slight...

Multi-Criteria Analysis to Prioritize Energy Sources for Ambience in Poultry Production Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Collatto,DC; Mansilha,RB; Chiwiacowsky,LD; Lacerda,DP.
ABSTRACT This paper intends to outline a model of multi-criteria analysis to pinpoint the most suitable energy source for heating aviaries in poultry broiler production from the point of view of the farmer and under environmental logic. Therefore, the identification of criteria was enabled through an exploratory study in three poultry broiler production units located in the mountain region of Rio Grande do Sul. In order to identify the energy source, the Analytic Hierarchy Process was applied. The criteria determined and validated in the research contemplated the cost of energy source, leadtime, investment in equipment, energy efficiency, quality of life and environmental impacts. The result of applying the method revealed firewood as the most appropriate...
